Es importante que el presidente de Estados
Unidos, Barack Obama, sepa que no todo el mundo
en Puerto Rico recibirá con beneplácito su visita
del próximo 14 de junio. Es necesario que
comprenda que habemos miles de puertorriqueños y
puertorriqueñas que aprovecharemos su visita “pro
forma y fugaz a nuestra Patria, para recordarle
que, en la cárcel de Terre Haute, en el estado de
Indiana, un hombre bueno y decente, patriota y
combatiente por la independencia de Puerto Rico,
de nombre Oscar López Rivera, ha cumplido 30 años
consecutivos de prisión, convirtiéndose en el
prisionero político puertorriqueño que más tiempo
ha estado encarcelado en Estados Unidos, y en uno
de los prisioneros políticos más antiguos de
nuestro hemisferio. Es necesario también que se
le recuerde que, en este momento, la
excarcelación de nuestro prisionero político
depende de que él le conceda un indulto, tras el
propio sistema haberle negado viciosamente el
remedio de una libertad condicionada.

Oscar López Rivera ha cumplido más años de cárcel
por su ideal de libertad para Puerto Rico que el
mismísimo Nelson Mandela, quien fue el prisionero
político más famoso y aclamado del siglo XX,
símbolo victorioso de la lucha por la libertad de
los negros en África del Sur e icono de la lucha
por los derechos civiles y humanos de toda la humanidad.

Barack Obama sabe por qué Oscar López Rivera está
preso. Sabe cuál ha sido el móvil de su lucha y
la de los demás combatientes, prisioneros y
mártires de la libertad de nuestra Patria; sabe
de su disposición al sacrificio y del alto precio
que han pagado y pagan por la discriminación,
persecución y represión de los aparatos
represivos del estado en Puerto Rico y Estados
Unidos. Conoce lo suficiente sobre nuestra
historia como para saber que Puerto Rico fue
invadido por las fuerzas armadas de su país en
1898 en un acto de guerra, y que desde entonces
ha sido una colonia de Estados Unidos. Sabe que
el llamado Estado Libre Asociado no ha resuelto
nuestro problema colonial porque el poder
político último sobre los asuntos de Puerto Rico
sigue residiendo en el Congreso de Estados
Unidos. Conoce de la lucha victoriosa de nuestro
pueblo por sacar a la Marina de Guerra de su país
de Culebra y Vieques. Conoce la fortaleza de
nuestra identidad y nuestra cultura, que ha
prevalecido por encima de todos los intentos de
asimilación. Por todas estas razones, debería
saber que tratar de resolver un agravio tan
profundo y real como la situación colonial de
Puerto Rico mediante un ente burocrático llamado
Grupo Interagencial de la Casa Blanca, es una
falta de respeto para Oscar López Rivera y para
los miles de puertorriqueños y puertorriqueñas
que perseguimos que el Gobierno de Estados Unidos
asuma su responsabilidad por la reparación
definitiva de dicho agravio con seriedad e inteligencia.

Por todas esas mismas razones, en CLARIDAD
hubiésemos preferido que, con motivo de la visita
a Puerto Rico de Barack Obama, el Movimiento
Patriótico y las fuerzas progresistas del País se
hubiesen puesto de acuerdo para realizar una sola
actividad, de todos los sectores, con el reclamo
único al Presidente Obama de que excarcele ahora
al prisionero político puertorriqueño Oscar López
Rivera. Congregarnos todos juntos tras la figura
aglutinadora de Oscar hubiese sido la forma más
contundente de plasmar las ansias de libertad de
nuestro pueblo ante el mandatario estadounidense,
y de recrear entre nosotros el ejemplo de
desprendimiento y generosidad que nos ha enseñado
el patriota encarcelado. Es muy lastimoso que las
diferencias en el interior del Movimiento
Patriótico hayan impedido dicha demostración unitaria y masiva.

No obstante, en las dos actividades pautadas para
protestar por la visita de Obama estará presente
de forma destacada el reclamo al Presidente de
Estados Unidos por la excarcelación inmediata del
prisionero político puertorriqueño, Oscar López
Rivera. Lograr el indulto de éste debe ser un
objetivo prioritario y urgente, lo mismo para los
que compartimos su ideal patriótico, que para
aquellos que, por razones humanitarias, entienden
que ya ha estado encarcelado por demasiado
tiempo. Por eso, desde CLARIDAD, Periódico de la
Nación Puertorriqueña, invitamos a todos los
puertorriqueños y puertorriqueñas de buena
voluntad a sumarse, con sus carteles por la
liberación de Oscar López Rivera, a las
actividades convocadas por la visita del
presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, el
próximo martes, 14 de junio en el Viejo San Juan.

It is important that the president of the United
States, Barack Obama, knows that not everyone in
Puerto Rico will receive him with blessings on
June 14. It is necessary for him to understand
that thousands of Puerto Rican men and women will
take advantage of his "pro forma" fleeting visit
to our Homeland to remind him that in the prison
in Terre Haute, in the state of Indiana, a good
decent man, a patriot and combatant for the
independence of Puerto Rico named Oscar López
Rivera, has spent 30 consecutive years in prison,
becoming the Puerto Rican political prisoner who
has served the most time in prison in the United
States, and one of the longest held political
prisoners in our hemisphere. It is also necessary
to remind him that now the release of our
political prisoner depends on his granting him
clemency, after the system viciously denied him relief by way of parole.

Oscar López Rivera has served more time in prison
for the ideal of freedom for Puerto Rico than
even Nelson Mandela, who was the most famous and
acclaimed political prisoner of the 20th century,
victorious symbol of the struggle against
apartheid in South Africa and icon of the
struggle for civil and human rights of all humankind.

Barack Obama knows why Oscar López Rivera is in
prison. He knows what has been the motivation of
Oscar and the other combatants, prisoners and
martyrs for the freedom of our Homeland; he knows
they are prepared to make sacrifices and he knows
the high cost they have paid and are paying for
the discrimination, persecution and repression by
the repressive apparatus of the state in Puerto
Rico and the United States. He knows enough about
our history to know that Puerto Rico was invaded
by the armed forces of his country in 1898 in an
act of war, and that since then it has been a
colony of the United States. He knows that the
so-called Free Associated State has not resolved
our colonial problem, because the ultimate
political power over Puerto Rican affairs
continues to reside in the Congress of the United
States. He is aware of the victorious struggle of
our people to oust the U.S. Navy from Culebra and
Vieques. He grasps the strength of our identity
and our culture, which has prevailed in spite of
all the attempts at assimilation. For all these
reasons, he should know that trying to resolve a
wrong so deep and so real as the colonial
situation of Puerto Rico through a bureaucratic
entity known as the White House Interagency Group
is a lack of respect for Oscar López Rivera and
for the thousands of Puerto Rican men and woman
who strive to get the United States government to
assume its responsibility for the definitive
remediation of said wrong with seriousness and intelligence.

For these same reasons, we at CLARIDAD would have
preferred that, on the occasion of Barack Obama's
visit to Puerto Rico, the Patriotic Movement and
progressive forces of the country could have
reached an agreement to have one sole activity
with all sectors participating, with the only
demand being that President Obama immediately
release Puerto Rican political prisoner
Oscar López Rivera. To have gathered all together
behind the cohesive figure of Oscar would have
been the most forceful way to capture our
people's yearning for freedom in the presence of
the U.S. leader, and to recreate among us the
example of unselfishness and generosity that our
imprisoned patriot has shown us. It's really a
shame that internal differences within the
Patriotic Movement have gotten in the way of such
a unitary and massive demonstration.

However, in the two activities scheduled to
protest Obama's visit, the demand that the
President of the United States immediately
release Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar
López Rivera will be present in a prominent way.
Achieving his release should have priority as an
urgent goal, for those of us who share his
patriotic idea, as well as for those who for
humanitarian reasons believe that he has been in
prison for too long. Thus, CLARIDAD, the
Newspaper of the Puerto Rican Nation, invites all
Puerto Rican men and women of good will to join,
with their posters for the release of Oscar López
Rivera, the activities that will convene for the
visit of the president of the United States,
Barack Obama, next Tuesday, June 14, in Old San Juan.
