Dinner and a Movie in Brooklyn, Dec 7th for Daniel McGowan

On December 7, 2005, New York City activist Daniel McGowan was among
the first people arrested in an FBI offensive against environmental
activists called "Operation Backfire." Operation Backfire is part of
the federal government's broader campaign of repression of
environmentalists and animal liberationists called the Green Scare
(an allusion to the Red Scares of the early and mid twentieth century).

To mark the five-year anniversary of the Operation Backfire arrests,
and to highlight the continued repression of activists that the
federal government has labeled "terrorists," Family & Friends of
Daniel McGowan will be hosting dinner and a movie this December.
Proceeds will go to Daniel's commissary account.

Daniel McGowan is an environmental and social justice activist from
New York City, now a political prisoner held in USP Marion. He’s
serving a seven-year sentence in federal prison for his role in two
arsons claimed by the Earth Liberation Front in Oregon, 2001. Daniel
was raised in Rockaway Beach, Queens and has boasted of having lived
in almost every borough of NYC. He has been active in everything from
rainforest preservation to indigenous rights to political-prisoner
support to military counter-recruitment. At the time of his arrest,
December 7th, 2005, Daniel was also working at WomensLaw.org, an
organization that assists survivors of domestic violence, and
pursuing a master's degree in acupuncture. In August 2008, Daniel was
moved to the Communication Management Unit (CMU) in Marion, Illinois,
a federal prison unit that bypassed the usual review process and
severely restricts inmates' communication with the outside world.
After organizing against CMUs with help from the Center for
Constitutional Rights, he was transferred to USP Marion general
population in October 2010. He is due to be released from prison on
June 5th, 2013.
