Oscar Grant and the Legacy of Police Brutality

For some the election of the nation’s first Black president will be forever marked by the killing of Oscar Grant by police in Oakland, CA. January 1, 2009. The hopes and dreams of so many remain, for some, exposed as false in the face of what has turned out to be another in a long line of violent deaths at the hands of police suffered by Black and Brown people in this country. In keeping with that tradition the guilty party goes almost without any punishment at all while an angry community can find no solace in the nation’s courts. This was our focus this week with guests Jack Bryson, father of two of Grant’s friends present the night of his murder, Cat Brooks of the ONYX organizing committee, Liz Derias of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement and DaveyD veteran journalist from the Bay Area.
