Media Notice Sent Today for Brother Mumia

Thursday, May 17 Press Conference in Support of Former Black Panther Mumia
Abu-Jamal to Coincide with Federal Appeal Hearing

Houston Supporters To Demonstrate at Harris County Courthouse

Houston supporters of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal will hold a press
conference at 4:30 on Thursday, May 17, the day Abu-Jamal's case goes before
federal judges. Speakers at the press conference include Deloyd Parker,
executive director of S.H.A.P.E. Community Center; Nation of Islam Minister
Robert Muhammad; activist and radio host Ray Hill, and other community
leaders.

The case of Abu-Jamal will be argued before a three-judge panel of the Third
Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia on May 17. This hearing could
result in a new trial, a sentence of life without parole or possibly a date
with the executioner. Abu-Jamal has been on death row in Pennsylvania for
25 years.

Mumia Abu-Jamal is recognized internationally as a political prisoner whose
Constitutional rights have been consistently violated in the state's mad
dash to railroad him to execution. This case concerns not only Abu-Jamal's
right to a fair trial, but the struggle against the death penalty and the
racist political repression of an outspoken journalist.

Mumia has authored five books while on death row and does a weekly column,
which can be heard in Houston on KPFT Radio. He has been declared an
honorary citizen of Paris, Palermo, and the Central District of Copenhagen.
Mumia was awarded the coveted Solhvervfonden Foundation Award in Copenhagen,
Denmark for his services to humanity as a voice of conscience. Amnesty
International has called for a new trial "on the basis that his original
trial was deeply flawed.

On May 17, activists from all over the world will assemble in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania to support Mumia Abu-Jamal's right to a fair trial.

In Houston, supporters will gather in front of the Harris County Courthouse
from 11:00 AM--1:00 PM and again in the afternoon from 4:00--6:00 PM.
