22 de diciembre Ateneo dedicará izamiento a Oscar López Rivera

El próximo jueves 22 de diciembre el Ateneo Puertorriqueño dedicará su
acto solemne del izamiento de la Monoestrellada al prisionero político
puertorriqueño Oscar López Rivera. El acto como todos los años se
llevará a cabo a las 12 del medio día frente a su histórica sede, en
el Viejo San Juan.

A las honras de la bandera y de López Rivera se espera la asistencia
de familiares, entre ellos su hermano José López, del congresista
Demócrata por Illinois, Luis V. Gutiérrez, y de René Pérez, integrante
del reconocido grupo Calle 13. Se develará una estatua del insigne
Ramón Emeterio Betances.

La ocasión representa un llamado a la atención y a las conciencias de
todos los puertorriqueños a reanudar el compromiso patriótico de
luchar por la libertad de este hermano puertorriqueño que este año
2011 ya cumplió 30 años de un cruel e injustificado encierro. La
dedicatoria de la actividad ocurre además a pocas semanas de que se
cumpla un nefasto año (el 5 de enero de 2011) de que la Junta de
Libertad Bajo Palabra (JLBP) del Departamento de Justicia de Estados
Unidos le negó a López Rivera la libertad. Como se denunció en su
momento el proceso ante la Junta, bajo la conducción del examinador
Mark Tarnner, fue uno arbitrario y viciado.

“El Sr. Tarnner trajo con él a un agente del FBI y a cinco personas
que supuestamente eran víctimas mías. Cuatro de los cinco dieron
largos testimonios que no eran otra cosa que diatribas repletas de
odio y veneno que usaron para compararme con Hitler y Bin Laden,
describió López Rivera sobre la vista en una carta enviada a su pueblo
puertorriqueño, en marzo de este año.
“Cuando llegó el turno de mi abogada Jan Susler y yo hablar fue cuando
el Sr. Tarnner asumió la posición del gran inquisidor. Su voz se tornó
en una sarcástica y en ningún momento prestó atención a lo que
estábamos diciendo. Después de casi tres horas dio la audiencia por
terminada y me espetó la recomendación de verme en 15 años más”,
agregaba.

La JLBP además no permitió que el licenciado Eduardo Villanueva Muñoz,
portavoz del Comité Pro Derechos Humanos (CPDH) asistiera a la vista.
Como ha expresado Villanueva Muñoz, la sentencia de 70 años contra
este hijo de San Sebastián, es lo mismo que una condena a muerte
civil. López Rivera ya tiene 68 años de edad, 10 años más de prisión
como burlonamente dijo Tarnner, le retendría en prisión hasta sus 83
años. De los 30 años que lleva en prisión, los primeros 12 fueron en
un total aislamiento.

Como también ha expresado el compañero licenciado Juan Santiago Nieves
sobre los prisioneros políticos puertorriqueños Oscar López y los
hermanos Avelino y Norberto González Claudio: “Los prisioneros
políticos representan nuestros mejores seres humanos y constituyen la
más elevada conciencia de lucha y denuncia del régimen colonial.
Defenderlos y honrarlos constituye nuestra tarea urgente.

On December 22, the Puerto Rican Ateneo will dedicate its solemn act
of raising the Puerto Rican flag to Puerto Rican political prisoner
Oscar López Rivera. The activity will take place, as it does every
year, at noon in front of the historical headquarters in Old San Juan.

The family, including his brother José López, Democratic congressman
from Illinois Luis V. Gutiérrez, and René Pérez, member of the
renowned group Calle 13, are expected to attend the activity honoring
the flag and López Rivera. A statue of the illustrious Ramón Emeterio
Betances will be unveiled.

The occasion represents an appeal to the attention and conscience of
all Puerto Ricans to renew their patriotic commitment to struggle for
the freedom of this Puerto Rican brother who this year marked the 30th
anniversary of his cruel and unjust imprisonment.

The dedication of the activity also takes place almost a year after
the awful January 5, 2011 denial of López Rivera’s parole by the
Parole Commission of the United States Department of Justice. As
denounced at the time of the proceedings conducted by Mark Tarnner
[sic], it was arbitrary and contaminated.

Mr. Tarnner [sic] brought with him an FBI agent and five people who
were supposedly my victims. Four of the five made long statements that
could only be described as diatribes full of hate and poison they used
to compare me to Hitler and Bin Laden,” López Rivera said of the
hearing in a letter sent to the Puerto Rican people in March of this
year. "When it was time for my lawyer Jan Susler and I to speak, Mr.
Tarnner [sic] took on the role of conducting a grand inquisition. His
voice became sarcastic and he never paid attention to what we were
saying. After almost three hours, the hearing ended and he handed down
his recommendation that the Commission see me after I served another
15 years," he added.

The Parole Commission also wouldn't allow attorney Eduardo Villanueva
Muñoz, spokesperson for the Human Rights Committee, to attend the
hearing. As Villanueva Muñoz has stated, the 70 year sentence handed
down to this son of San Sebastián is the same as a living death
sentence. López Rivera is already 68 years old, 10 [sic] more years in
prison, as Tarnner [sic] sarcastically said, would keep him behind
bars until he is 83 year old. Of the 30 years he's been in prison, the
first [sic] 12 were in total isolation.

As compañero attorney Juan Santiago Nieves has said about Puerto Rican
political prisoners Oscar López and brothers Avelino and Norberto
González Claudio: “The political prisoners represent our best human
beings and comprise the highest consciousness of struggle and
denunciation of the colonial regime. Defending and honoring them is
our urgent task.
