Operation Backfire: A New Resource for Activists from theNLG!!

The National Lawyers Guild is proud to announce a new resource: Operation Backfire: a Survival Guide for Environmental and Animal Rights Activists. This pocket-sized booklet describes how environmental and animal rights activists have been targeted by the government and branded as the top threat to domestic security. Operation Backfire discusses new federal legislation written to allow environmental and animal rights activists to be charged as terrorists. It also provides information on recent prosecutions under these laws.

Operation Backfire features a "know-your-rights" section that offers advice for handling encounters with the police and FBI in various situations. While not a substitute for legal advice, it includes suggestions for how to respond when questioned or presented with a warrant, as well as information about your rights when asked for identification or a DNA sample. The "know-your-rights" section concludes with a discussion of grand juries, subpoenas, and FBI attempts to turn activists into informants. Readers are encouraged to call the NLG Green Scare Hotline at 888-NLG-ECOL (888-654-3265) for more assistance.

To request free copies of Operation Backfire, call the National Lawyers Guild office at (212) 679-5100. You can also download the booklet at nlg.org.
