"I want to thank everyone who did whatever to help me out. Sincerely it
meant a lot to me and I appreciate it. (Harjit Singh Gill, former Animal
Rights Prisoner)
Welcome to the July 2006 edition of Spirit of Freedom. I would like to
apologise to everyone for the delay in publishing this edition of Sprit of
Freedom. A lot has been happening for ELP recently and a delay was
unavoidable. Moving away from our apologies, as people will see below,
there has been a large number of events occurring around the world,
including even more repression in Italy against the group Il Silvestre, so I
shall keep this Editorial quite short. But I would just like to announce
the sad news that ELP's Italian group has formally closed down. The
decision to close the group was taken for personal reasons by the volunteers
involved. On behalf of the entire International ELP Support Network, Spirit
of Freedom would like to thank our former Italian ELP volunteers for their
help, friendship and support over the past three years and we wish them all
the best for the future. However despite the closure of Italian ELP we
would like to remind everyone that the International ELP Support Network
remains strong and no matter where you are in the world, please support the
eco-prisoners and no compromise in defence of Mother Earth!
COURT REPORTS & LEGAL UPDATES
IL SILVESTRE DEFENDANTS GUILTY!
On 07/07/06 the long running trial of eleven members of the Italian
eco-anarchist group Il Silvestre came to an end.
The 11 defendants had been accused of forming themselves into a
direct action group known as COR (Revolutionary Offensive Cells) and accused
of carrying out a number of actions including acts of arson, targeting right
wing politicians and targeting the construction site of a police station.
There was practically no evidence against the 11, other than the
fact Il Silvestre had published a COR press release in their magazine Wild
Earth. However despite the lack of evidence, six of the eleven defendants
were found Guilty and have been handed sentences of between 3½ years to 6
years imprisonment.
ELP regards the entire trial as an act of political repression
against Il Silvestre and an overt act of state censorship. The police did
not like the fact they had no one to blame for the COR actions so they
decided to target a group which dared to publicise the COR actions.
ELP also notes that during the trial part of the "evidence" against
the defendants was the fact some of them had been involved with solidarity
work for Swiss anti-nuclear eco-prisoner Marco Camenisch. The fact
defendants supported Marco was used as evidence of their guilt and again is
another clear sign of the politically motivated nature of this trial.
The six who have been sentenced are William Frediani (accused of
being the leader of COR and sentenced to 6 years); Francesco Gioia
(sentenced to 5 years 2 months); Costantino Ragusa (sentenced to 5 years);
Alessio Perondi (sentenced to 3 years 8 months); Benedetta Galante
(sentenced to 3 years 6 months); and Leonardo Landi (sentenced to 3 years 6
months).
At the time of going to print, William, Allessio and Leonardo are
all under house arrest. However Francesco, Costantino and Benedetta are
imprisoned.
Francesco is facing a second trial accused of escaping from house
arrest whilst awaiting his trial. Costantino and Benedetta are being held
accused of involvement in a campaign to sabotage electricity pylons in
protest against nuclear power. See the article "More Italian Repression"
below.
MORE ITALIAN REPRESSION
On 04/05/06 the Italian police raided and arrested ten eco-anarchists based
in Pisa. All ten have been charged with conspiracy to overthrow the State
and using explosives to damage power lines. Some of the ten have also been
charged with carrying and using explosive devices.
The destruction of power lines charges relate to an event in Septemb
er 2005 where persons unknown used explosives to damage an electricity pylon
in the mountains near Pisa in a protest against nuclear power.
All of the ten are linked to the Italian eco-activist group Il
Silvestre. Following their arrests five of the ten have been placed under
house arrest. The other five, Costantino Ragusa, Silvia Guerini, Federico
Bonamici, Giuseppe Bonamici and Benedetta Galante have all been remanded
into custody.
YET MORE ITALIAN ARRESTS
On the same day as the 10 Il Silvestre members where arrested in Pisa, 3
other anarchists were arrested in Rome accused of stealing a car. It is
unclear if the arrests are linked but one of those arrested in Rome is
former ALF prisoner Sergio Maria Stefani, a well-known, dedicated animal
rights activist who the Italian authorities have a history of trying to
frame for crimes he did not commit. At the time of going to print Sergio
and his co-defendants are all under house arrest.
SUDAN VIOLENCE & ARRESTS
On the 22nd of April 2006 a group of unarmed protesters from the Amri tribe
gathered in a school in Marawi, Sudan, to discuss the building of a dam and
how it would effect their livelihoods.
The Marawi authorities responded to this meeting by attacking the
school with machine gun fire and heavy artilary, killing three people and
injuring over fifty.
Following the attack by the security forces, 3 of the people in the
school were arrested, Ali Mohamed Alhassen Massad, Fadalla Idris Alajaimy
and Mohamed Ahmed Alajaimy. (Mohamed Ahmed Alajaimy was one of the people
injured during the attack on the school).
All three detainees have each been charged with articles 51 (Waging
War against the State) which if convicted carries the death sentence; 182
(Criminal Mischief), and 139 (Penalty for Causing Intentional Wounding).

OREGON ARRESTS UPDATE
In March 2006 Nathan Block and Joyanna Zacher were charged with involvement
in the Romania Chevrolet Truck Center arson. As a result of this they have
each had 35 additional arson charges placed against them and a second "use
of a destructive device" placed against them.
Nathan and Joy are both now facing two over-arching conspiracy
charges, 47 arson charges, one attempted arson charge and two "use of a
destructive device" charges. If found guilty they face Life imprisonment.
Further developments occurred in mid May, when the FBI accused
Justin Solondz along with Bill Rodgers of also being involved with the 2001
University of Washington arson for which Briana Walters is already due to
stand trial for.
Initially Briana's trial was due to occur in June 2006, but
following these new charges the trial has been postponed for an indefinate
period of time. For more info on Briana check out her support campaign
website http://supportbriana.org/
With Justin Solondz, as ELP supporters will be aware, this is now
the second arson the FBI have accused Justin of being involved with.
In April 06, Justin named as a suspect in an arson against a horse
coral and with these new allegations of involvement in the University of
Washington fire, it means Justin is now facing two counts of arson, one
conspiracy to commit arson, and two charges of using a destructive device
during a violent crime. If found guilty on all charges he faces Life
imprisonment. At the point of going to print the where abouts of Justin are
unknown.
Besides naming more suspects in the University of Washington arson,
also in mid May the FBI formally accused Chelsea Gerlach, Stanislas
Meyerhoff, Josephine Overaker and Rebecca Rubin with involvement in the
Earth Liberation Front arson against a ski lift in the Vail, Colorado. At
the point of going to print ELP is unsure of the exact wording of the new
charges each of these defendants face, however coupled with other charges,
if found guilty on all charges it is likely they each face Life
imprisonment.
JEFF HOGG
In mid May 2006, the American activist Jeff Hogg was jailed for refusing to
testify before a Grand Jury investigating the series of direct actions,
which occurred in Oregon.
Under the Grand Jury rules Jeff may be held for up to 18 months or
until the Grand Jury ceases to sit, whichever is the sooner.
STATEMENT ON GERLACH & SAVOIE
Based on information sent to ELP by some of the Oregon 16 defendants, as
well as statements by lawyers close to the cases, and looking at the June 06
bail hearing for Nathan Block and Joyanna Zacher, ELP is removing Chelsea
Gerlach from our prisoner list. We are also withdrawing our support for
Suzanne Savoie (who is currently on bail).
Gerlach and Savoie have both been named by some of their
co-defendants, as well as by some of the lawyers, as cooperating with the
authorities which has included making statements against others.
We have no yet confirmed the full extent of their cooperation with
the authorities (and there may be others who they have named), but we have
confirmed that both Gerlach and Savoie have made statements against Nathan
Block and Joyanna Zacher.
ELP will release more information as our investigation continues.
If anyone has any information about the extent of Gerlach and Savoie's
cooperation, please contact ELP.
AUBURN ARRESTEES UPDATE
At the end of May 2006 the American eco-activist, Lauren Weiner, as part of
a plea bargain, admitted "conspiracy to commit an offence or defraud the
Unites States". This is a lesser charge than that faced by her two
co-defendants, Zach Jenson and Eric McDavid and as part of her Plea Bargain,
Weiner has agreed to testify against these other two.
Weiner has not yet been sentenced for her trechoary and remains
free. ELP does not support police informants and we have withdrawn our
support for Weiner.
CHUK'SHON EARTH FIRST! TWO
The sentencing of two American Earth First! activists, Rod Coronado & Matt
Crozier, for their involvement in the sabotaging of a mountain lion hunt has
been postponed yet again. They were due to be sentenced in June 2006.
However the sentencing date has now been put back again. As soon as the
sentence is known we will let everyone know.
ARRESTS IN SWITZERLAND
On 12/04/06 Dutch citizen, (**Name omitted**) and a Canadian, Gabriel
Villeneuve, were arrested in Switzerland accused of spraypainting animal
rights slogans on a pharmaceutical building. Both were initially remanded
into custody before being released on bail. Following their release ELP has
been told that even if found guilty the men will only face suspended
sentences.
HANDAN DEMIRALP
In February 2006, Turkish animal rights activist Handan Demiralp attempted
to photograph the poor conditions inside a Turkish pet shop. Her action
turned into an argument with the pet shop owner and allegedly resulted in
Handan attempting to assault the pet shop owner. Handan was arrested for
her action but the case was later dropped due to a lack of evidence (other
than the word of the pet shop owner).
POLITICAL SENTENCING IN BRITAIN
In mid May 2006, four British animal rights activists, Jon Ablewhite, Kerry
Whitburn, John Smith and Josephine Mayo where sentenced for their
involvement in a six year long campaign against a family involved with the
breeding of guinea pigs for torture & death at the hands of vivisectors.
The three men where each sentenced to a highly political twelve years
imprisonment after each was accredited with being a leading figure in a
campaign which ultimately saw the family cease their involvement in the
vivisection industry.
Josephine Mayo, was said in court to of not had some a high profile
role in the campaign, was sentenced to four years imprisonment.
ARRESTS IN SWEDEN
On 24/05/06 two Swedish animal rights activists, who only wish to be known
as Kille21 and Kvinna25 where arrested accused of using etching fluid to
damage the windows of the fur store, Havgards Pals in Malmo. The two are
accused of 'criminal damage' and
'preparation to commit criminal damage'. Both were temporarily remanded
into custody but have since been released on bail. A few days after the
initial arrest a third person was arrested. A fourth suspect, wanted by the
police, is believed to be "on the run".
GARFIELD GABBARD
In mid May 2006 Garfield Gabbard, was sentenced to 36 months with 21 months
to serve having pleaded guilty to "Affray" during an animal rights
demonstration against Covance. During the demonstration Garfield jumped
onto the bonnet of a car and then kicked a security guard who pulled him off
the car. Charges of Assault causing Actual Bodily Harm where dropped as
part of his guilty plea.
In an unrelated incident, Garfield was also facing charges of
making death threats to a member of the neo-nazi British Nationalist Party.
However these charges have also been dropped.
ADAM DURAND
In mid May 2006 American animal rights activist, Adam Durand, was given an
outrageous and highly political six-months prison sentence for exposing
animal cruelty.
Adam took a hand held video camera into a "battery" chicken farm and
filmed the horrific and appalling conditions that the hens are subjected to.
His "reward" for his exposing of such blatant animal cruelty was to be put
on trial for criminal tresspass.

Over 50 other people were injured. ELP's thoughts are with the family &
