WASHINGTON - The almost three decades of imprisonment of Oscar López and Carlos Alberto Torres are sufficient reason for the United Nations to intervene in favor of the Puerto Rican political prisoners, warned the Human Rights Committee of Puerto Rico.

The organization revealed yesterday the presentation it has sent and will formally present next Monday before the Decolonization Committee of the U.N. seeking the release of the Puerto Rican political prisoners.

The Decolonization Committee of the U.N. has scheduled Monday to discuss a new resolution which will recognize the right of Puerto Rico to its self determination and indepenence and will call for the case of Puerto Rico to be discussed in 2009, as an independent matter, at the General Assembly of the international organization.

At a time when the White House and presidential candidates accept that in Puerto Rico, “there is no full democracy,” the spokesperson for the Human Rights Committee, Eduardo Villanueva, affirmed that part of any process regarding the political future of Puerto Rico should be the release of prisoners, who have fought a regime that “those who represent and administer it admit is anti democratic.”

In reports published in December of 2005 and 2007, the White House has described Puerto Rico as a mere territory of the United States, subject to the will of Congress, which includes that it could give the country to another nation.

“They have kept our political prisoners for 28 and 29 years behind bars, far from their families, subjected for many years to periods of sleep deprivation, sensory deprivation, denial of adequate medical care, and monitored telephone calls and communication as if they were common criminals, even when (the United States) knows that they are combatants for the self determination of Puerto Rico,” added Villanueva in the presentation sent to the Decolonization Committee.

Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá has announced that he will attend next week’s session.

Dear Partner,

After the approval of the 33rd United Nations’ resolution by consensus on June 23, 2014 asking the United States (US) to immediately decolonize of Puerto Rico, we should work together to force the United States government to comply with it.

The facts that the United States government has maintained Puerto Rico as its colony for 116 years, has had Oscar López Rivera in prison for 33 years for fighting for Puerto Rico decolonization, and has ignored 33 UN resolutions to decolonize Puerto Rico, confirm that the US government has no intentions of ever decolonizing Puerto Rico. Therefore, we need to form a tsunami of people to force the US to comply with the 33 resolutions.

We should peacefully protest at least 3 times a year until we achieve our goal. The first one will be a march up to the US Courthouse in Puerto Rico on the Abolition of Slavery Day on March 22. The second will be another march in Puerto Rico on a day before the UN’s Puerto Rico decolonization hearing. The third one will be a protest in New York City on the same day the UN holds its Puerto Rico decolonization hearing.

These 3 protests are indispensable, because those who have colonies don’t believe in justice for all.

Sincerely,
José M López Sierra

Dear Partner,

Since the United Nations determined in 1960 that colonialism is a crime against humanity, there is no longer a need for plebiscites. The solution is to give Puerto Rico her sovereignty.

But being the United States government does not want to, it continues to advocate the use of plebiscites to find out what Puerto Ricans want. Even if 100% of Puerto Ricans would want to continue being a US colony, Puerto Rico would still be obligated to accept her sovereignty to then decide what she wants to do.

The only thing these plebiscites are good for is to divide Puerto Ricans. A Puerto Rican didn’t invade us to make us a colony. When will we understand that we need to unite?

This is why we must peacefully protest at least 3 times a year until Puerto Rico is decolonized!

To the Town Square with Oscar
Our National Hero
With this slogan, we will meet in all of the 78 town squares in Puerto Rico and the diaspora on the 29th of each month protesting for the liberation of Oscar López Rivera, and for the decolonization of Puerto Rico. Click on the following link to watch a video by Edwin Chungo Molina, the creator of this campaign, explaining his idea: https://youtu.be/Azp6EV6b2L0
United Partners for Puerto Rico Decolonization will be at the Bayamón Town Square from 2 to 4 PM. We invite everyone to join us with your shirt, flag, sign and flyers to inform the public about Oscar, and why he is in prison for the last 34 years?
It is important that the public understands that our Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera has the international right to do whatever is necessary to decolonize Puerto Rico. The United States government is the criminal for maintaining Puerto Rico as its colony for the last 117 years!
We invite you to 3 more peaceful protests that are scheduled permanently throughout the whole year.
• On the Abolition of Slavery Day, Tuesday, March 22, 2016, from 6 to 8 PM, we will have our 3rd Oscar – Mandela March in Puerto Rico 2016. We will march from the Capitol Building to the United States Court House in Old San Juan.

• On the day before the United Nations’ (UN) hearing on Puerto Rico decolonization, we will have the 3rd March for Puerto Rico Independence 2016. This march is organized by the Independence Dialogue Table, and we will march over the Dos Hermanos Bridge and through the Condado. We will give more information later.

• On the very day of the UN hearing about Puerto Rico decolonization, usually on the Monday after Fathers’ Day, we will have our 3rd Oscar – Mandela March in New York City 2016. We will march at 9 AM from Hunter College to the UN. We will stay across the avenue from the UN all day to inform the public about Puerto Rico’s colonial relationship with the United States.
These annual and permanent protests are necessary, because those who have Oscar in jail for his struggle to decolonize his homeland don’t believe in JUSTICE FOR ALL! www.TodosUnidosDescolonizarPR.blogspot.com
