During that time, the schools were having their funding cut all while the prisons were getting more and more crowded. As much as I despise the state monopoly and control of education, my classmates and I were furious that this shit was happening. We talked about the "three strikes" bullshit in a sociology class I took. We were watching a video on the California prison system which was horrifying and disturbing to watch. A prison guard was interviewed in the video, and she said that if she knew that the "three strikes" law would have resulted in this kind of shit she would have never had voted for it (the law was passed in response to the kidnapping and murder of a 12-year old girl by a repeat offender but I suspect it had less to do with her tragedy and far more to do with the prison system wanting more control).
